Bilingual
post office consultation

As a federal institution, Canada Post is subject to the Official Languages Act (OLA). Under the OLA and its Regulations, Canada Post is required to review its network of bilingual post offices every 10 years, based on linguistic data from the most recent decennial census.

This review is done during the Official Languages Regulations Reapplication Exercise (the Exercise) and helps to keep the linguistic designation of offices up to date. The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat coordinates the Exercise, while Canada Post is responsible for taking the necessary actions to confirm the linguistic designation of its post offices.

Post offices that provide communications or services to the public are subject to the Exercise and a number of them may be required to offer bilingual services. Consultation will be held as required in select areas.

Once the consultation is closed, Canada Post will analyse the feedback received from the official language minority population to help determine which of its post offices should be designated as bilingual. When determining which offices will provide services in both official languages, Canada Post will take into consideration the feedback received as part of the consultation, as well as other factors defined in the Official Languages Regulations.
