Since childhood, Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi showed a keen interest in physical and electrical science. By age 21, the communications pioneer had built a device that could send radio signals several kilometres. He sent the first electromagnetic signal across the Atlantic from Poldhu, England to St. John's, Newfoundland, and in 1902, sent the first wireless message from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to Poldhu. Marconi's revolutionary system was used to establish the world's first commercial transatlantic radio-communication service.
