OTTAWA – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has asked for the appointment of mediators at the outset of two negotiations with Canada Post. The Corporation supports the requests.

The decision to appoint mediators rests with The Honourable Patricia Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour. She can appoint mediators at any time in the collective bargaining process.

The requests do not trigger any countdown to the right to strike or lockout, and it will remain business as usual as negotiations begin and continue into the New Year.

We welcome support that allows the parties to work together to solve issues at the table. We want to reach negotiated settlements in a timely manner.

CUPW represents delivery agents and plant workers. The collective agreement with Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers is due to expire on December 31, 2017. The collective agreement for Urban employees expires on January 31, 2018.

Agreements continue to apply once they expire, in accordance with the Canada Labour Code.
