Operations update: Safely delivering items through the holidays

December 23, 2024

Canada Post is doing its best to deliver for customers over the holidays. We’re delivering items that were held in our network during the strike and processing new commercial volumes safely and quickly.

New commercial volumes are being inducted and pickups are under way. All new parcels and mail (including Neighbourhood Mail and Transaction Mail) will continue to be processed on a first-in, first-out basis.

We appreciate customers’ patience as we continue work towards returning to full service levels.

Update on the status of our network

We have processed the parcels that were held in major plants during the strike, which are now moving through the network for delivery.

The processing of accumulated volumes and the return to normal delivery standards will take longer in some parts of the country. While employees are making a best effort to stabilize delivery operations for rural and remote areas, delays should be expected into early 2025.

We are focused on working through a large volume of Neighbourhood Mail as our operations have ramped up. A significant portion has already been processed. Service standards for Transaction Mail will continue to be affected in the short-term as we work through the existing volume.

Holiday closures

Canada Post will be closed December 25 and 26, and January 1. Post offices will be closed and there will be no collection or delivery operations.

Customers should continue to expect delivery delays

With a large, integrated network of processing plants, depots and post offices nationally, we expect to return to full service levels in early January.

For domestic packages, customers should continue to expect delivery delays into early January 2025. For packages being transported between urban centres – where our processing and distribution facilities are located – customers should expect delivery delays of two to three days. For packages being transported over longer distances, customers should expect delivery delays of up to 10 days.

Reminders for our customers

A few reminders as we continue to stabilize operations:

Parcels and mail

  • We are accepting mail and parcels at our plants, depots and commercial deposit centres (CDCs).
  • Both scheduled pickups and on-demand pickups are now available.
  • Our post offices and retail outlets are accepting new parcels, mail, and returns.
  • Date-specific Neighbourhood Mail is not currently available. The service will resume once our operations have stabilized; we will notify customers as soon as possible.
  • All return labels created on or after October 15 will remain valid for up to 45 days.
  • For international mail and parcels, customers should continue to expect delays into early 2025. We are accepting new international mail and parcels as of today (December 23).

On-time service guarantees

  • On-time service guarantees remain suspended as we continue to ramp up operations.
  • We will notify customers when on-time service guarantees are reinstated and operations have stabilized.

 Our commitment to customers

As we safely ramp up our operations, we recognize the urgency to process and deliver the items already in our network as well as new items that are deposited. We know customers are relying on us to deliver. We will continue to keep Canadians and our customers informed.
